Cheaper car insurance
How do I get cheaper car insurance?
There are some things you can’t change easily – your age, sex, where you live, even what car you drive. Fortunately though, there are things you can do to reduce your car insurance.
Think carefully before you add more drivers to your policy, particularly if they’ll be seen as more risky because of their driving age, experience or previous insurance history. It might sometimes be cheaper to add them as and when required if they’re not going to use the car that often. Saying this though, it sometimes makes more financial sense to add someone. A single male seeking insurance on their own may actually get a higher quote than someone looking to add their female partner to the policy.
If possible, try and leave your car locked overnight in a garage, or failing that on a driveway. Statistically, most car thefts happen at night, so reducing the chances of this happening can dramatically improve your premiums. If you can’t park your car securely, consider fitting an approved alarm and/or immobiliser to deter thieves. Some insurers actually insist on one for expensive cars.
Accepting a voluntary excess or higher excess will reduce your premiums further. The more you’re willing to pay yourself, the less your premium will be.
Finally, think carefully about what you really want from your policy. If you think you could live without a courtesy car, or don’t need legal expenses covered, then go without – these will reduce your insurer’s costs and therefore your premiums.
