Comparing credit cards

How do I compare different credit cards?

Knowing what you want a new credit card for is the best place to start when comparing credit card deals.  And our credit card comparison tables let you order the different deals by what’s important to you.

If you’re looking for a card to use regularly, start with the purchase rate being offered.  If you want to transfer a balance from an existing card, take a look at the different balance transfer options and charges on offer.  In both instances, see whether the card offers any introductory periods, and how long they last.  Also look at the card’s typical APR, as this is the rate of interest you’ll be charged if you have a balance outstanding on the card after the introductory offers are over.

If several cards offer the same rates of interest and introductory periods, then look at the other benefits that the card can offer, for example loyalty points, cashback, or even payments to charities.

If you’ve had credit problems or don’t have credit history, chances are you have a poor credit rating.  While you’re not going to be offered the most competitive rate of interest, it doesn’t necessarily stop you from comparing and applying for a credit card.  On the cards comparison table, click on the link that says “Adverse Cards” to look at cards available to you.  In some cases, taking out one of these cards and using it responsibly can help build or rebuild your credit rating.
